What FPA is and why it spikes in summer

Your bill has a line marked "F.P.A" or "Fuel Price Adjustment". This is usually the biggest reason a summer bill jumps.

When NEPRA sets the tariff, it estimates the fuel cost of generating electricity. Actual fuel costs move up and down, so the difference is reconciled every month - and that appears on your bill as FPA.

It rises in summer because of water. For much of the year Pakistan leans on cheaper hydel power. Before the monsoon arrives, dam levels fall, so the grid runs expensive thermal plants on furnace oil and imported LNG. Costlier fuel means a higher FPA - exactly when cooling demand is at its peak. The June-August 2026 quarterly adjustment

Alongside FPA, a Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTA) is affecting bills right now.

NEPRA reviews tariffs every three months. According to news reports, the first quarterly adjustment of 2026 brought a per-unit reduction applied to the June, July and August billing cycles nationwide, including K-Electric.

So why hasn't your bill dropped? Because that cut did not arrive alone. Reports indicate the June relief was largely offset by a fuel charge adjustment, leaving only a small net reduction. Add higher summer usage on top, and the bill still feels heavier. The other charges on your bill

Beyond the cost of the units you use, a bill bundles several charges:

Energy / unit cost (base tariff): the per-unit rate for your consumption slab.
FPA / FCA: the monthly fuel adjustment explained above.
Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTA): a three-monthly capacity and system adjustment.
Taxes and surcharges: GST, TV fee, and government surcharges or levies.

Practical ways to lower a summer bill

You cannot change the charges, but you control your units:

Set your AC to 26°C - each degree lower adds noticeably to consumption.
Avoid heavy appliances such as the iron and washing machine during peak hours (6pm-10pm).
Switch to inverter ACs, LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances.
Cut standby load - switch off TVs, chargers and idle devices.
